“The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
1 Corinthians 11:23
The Ordinances of the Church: There are two ceremonies that we may observe during our Worship Service at Linden Hills. We call these ceremonies “ordinances” of the church because we believe that that Christ “ordained” them to be observed by His church until His return. The two ordinances are Baptism and The Lord’s Supper (which is sometimes referred to as “Communion”).
What is The Lord’s Supper? The Lord’s Supper (or Communion) is celebrated to remind us of the death of Jesus Christ and to anticipate His final return. It is a time that has been set aside for God’s people to join together to eat a small piece of bread (symbolizing the body of Christ that was crucified) and to sip a small cup of juice (symbolizing the blood of Jesus that was shed for our sins).
Why celebrate The Lord’s Supper? Jesus gave us a command to observe this remembrance until He comes again (1 Corinthians 11:23-24). It serves a reminder to us of the cost of the salvation that can ONLY come through Jesus Christ (John 14:26). It serves to unite the family of God in worship and in fellowship with each other. (Acts 2:42-47)
Who can celebrate The Lord’s Supper? Linden Hills believes in what is normally referred to as “open communion.” This is the belief that ALL those who have a persoanal, saving relationship with Jesus Christ, and have examined their relationships with other belivers, are welcome to join with us in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. (See the Bible Verses referenced above. Also see “What does it take to get to heaven?”). With the guardian’s approval, we also welcome children to join with us as a beginning step in their spiritual growth and obedience to Jesus. (Mark 10:13-16).
